Class AD

Hifi Rose calls the amplifier section in the RA180 Class AD. It is essentially a Class D amplifier that incorporates Gallium Nitride FET's in a class D amplification architecture. Class D amplification can theoretically offer perfect, linear output at 0% distortion with 100% power efficiency. To achieve this theoretical ideal the switching action of the power supply requires very high speed and accuracy. This is where Class D has largely fallen short. Most Class D amps use Silicon FET's in their design, which are not as linear due to their switching speed limitations. This limitation is responsible for the fatiguing nature of traditional Class D amplifier designs. The GaN FET's used in the RA 180 are faster, and therefore are more linear at the switching frequencies that Class D amplifiers operate at. The result is clean, powerful, accurate and non-fatiguing.

 

Another limiting factor of traditional Class D amplifiers is the high frequency cutoff. Most Class D amps have noise just outside of the audible band (20kHz) and steep filters are employed to keep that noise out. The RA180 amplifier boasts a bandwidth from 20Hz to 50kHz, and is only 3dB down at 100kHz, 6dB down at 200kHz. Although we cannot technically hear those frequencies, there is still information pertaining to harmonics and overtones that fall in those frequencies which do tend to give music a more natural quality when present.

 

Power Supply

The power supply circuit was developed exclusively for the RA180. It was designed with 4th generation SiC FET technology to provide high performance and high efficiency compared to typical Si FET.

In addition, ROSE has developed a 2.5 KW Power Factor Correction Circuit (PFC) and a large-capacity capacitor. This is designed to allow the unit to be unaffected by sudden load fluctuations. The power unit is developed to support a damping factor of 200 and a total of 1000W of power.

As the heart and soul of the amplifier, it is designed to produce powerful bass and soft treble faithfully.

The Hifi Rose RA 180 offers 200 watts per channel into FOUR channels, or 400 watts into 2 channels. With four channels of amplification, one can actively power a two-way speaker and have an adjustable crossover range from 600hz to 6kHz with adjustable gain. Or you can just combine the channels and drive a passive pair of speakers with 400 watts of GaN (Gallium Nitride) Class AD power.

 

There is not only a built-in phono stage inside the RA180, but it is adjustable via the Turnover and Roll-off knobs on the front of the unit. This allows one to fine-tune the phono stage to their phono cartridge.
